Testimony > Chidren's rights

The convention on children's rights :

First step but still insufficient

This convention ratified by most of the United Nation's country members, except the United States of America and Somalia, aims to ensure the protection of children in the world against the daily difficulties and evils they are victims of : child exploitation, exclusion, discrimination, sexual abuse, war, etc...

This text is essential as it is the base of the universal obligations of States to protect childhood. It will only be efficient if it is applied and if adults are aware and sensibilized to their obligation towards children.
Ten years ago, 200.000 children under the age of 14 were fighting with weapons, today they are over 300.000. 140 million children still have no access to primary education (there are 855 million illiterate people in the world, 1/6th of humanity, of which 2/3rds are women) although there has been great progress. 180 million children suffer from hunger and malnutrition, 3 million die each year from the lack of clean water. More encouraging signs are to be mentionned, mortality of children under the age of 5 has decreased of 50 % in 30 years, 8 of 10 children of the Third World attend primary school today.

For us, field operator, this text must be completed by one obligation :

That the signatory States apply and thoroughly see to the application of this convention.

We wish to add to the children's rights convention :

The age limit to start work at 16 for children. It is set today at 14 years old.
That the age limit authorising a child to carry guns and take part in wars be set from 14 to 18 and that the people in charge of enlisting may be pursued penally.
That the International Institutions and Governments that promulgate this text may be coherent in their actions, not taking part in international embargos thus placing children in danger.
